The Panda coins will be produced by Shen Zhen Guo Bao, Shen Yang and Shanghai Mint. It would be interesting to see how many varieties are there for this issue.

In addition, from internet pictures, it seems that the stone sculpture on the centre stair way has become plain like the temple design used before 2002. Let's get the real thing to see for ourselves.

Commentary: Post - 1999 version prices went up across the board except for the 2001. Notably, the 2010 version crossed the S$60 mark for the first time. And it was definitely not due to high shipping as shipping cost was consistent at 20% of item price for past 3 months since September. Number of transactions were surprisingly low for pre - 2000 version. However, there were still bargains to be picked as buyers were put of by the high shipping cost of US$30 for the double-sealed 2000 Mirrored Panda and it ended really cheap. Even for myself, I managed to pick up a scarce 1999 Large Date - which is more scarce than the Large Serif Date.

While the prices of the ungraded coin play catch up, the graded coin prices seems to have reached their potential. Prices of the graded coins dipped in June by about 17% before recovering recently.

1990 Silver Proof Panda

Planned & Actual Mintage: 20,000

Highest Certified: NGC PF70/PCGS PR69 DCAM

Average transacted prices (Jan - Nov 2010):

Coin in capsule - S$119.55 (US$68.36) (6)
Double-sealed coin - S$174.36 (US$118.30) (2)
Coin in capsule with COA & Box - S$149.10 (US$106.80) (2)

The average transacted prices do not reflect well on current prices as prices doubled for transactions made in October. The double-sealed and Box Set has gone for above US$150.

NGC PF69 UCAM - S$209.11 (US$135)
NGC PF70 UCAM - S$1258.69 (US$900)

PCGS PR66 DCAM - S$92.79 (US$51)

1989 Silver Proof Panda

1989 is the first year of issue of the BU Silver Panda coin. Hence, the design of the Proof and BU versions are only differentiated by the 'P' mint mark besides the proof finishes. The Panda on the Proof version tends to be frosty compared to the BU although there were also frosty versions found on the BU types.

Planned and Actual Mintage: 25,000

Average Transacted Prices (Jan - Nov 2010):

Coin in capsule - S$103.27 (US$48.83) (2)
Coin in capsule with Box - S$96.91 (US$65.00) (2)
Coin in capsule with COA & Box - S$124.67 (US$86.47) (3)
Double sealed coin - S$96.02 (US$62.50) (6)
Double sealed coin with COA - S$120.36 (US$84.00) (2)
Double sealed coin with COA & Box - S$102.33 (US$65.26) (4)

The potential of the 1989 version could have been reached with prices more than doubled in November from US$46 to US$122 for a doubled sealed coin with COA. Price of around US$100 would be a good buy for a set with COA and Box.

NGC PF69 UCAM - S$159.74 (US$100)
PCGS PR68 DCAM - S$83.87 (US$46)
PCGS PR69 DCAM - S$128.31 (US$82.72) (4)

Do not that prices for the graded coins were from first half of 2010. No transactions could be tracked for second half of the year.

1987 Silver Proof Panda

The 1987 Silver Proof Panda coin the the first 1 troy ounce Silver Panda coin being produced.

Diameter - 40 mm
Planned Mintage - 31,000
Actual Mintage - 30,720
Mint - Shen Yang Mint

Transacted Prices:
Coin in capsule - S$274.29 (US$188.13) (6)
Double-sealed coin - S$231.77 (US$159)

NGC PF66 UCAM - S$188.87 (US$110.58)
NGC PF67 UCAM - S$249.65 (US$168.66)
NGC PF69 UCAM - S$491.77 (US$317.50) (2)
PCGS PR68 DCAM - S$304.76 (US$202.50)

It is not surprising that the double-seal costs less than the coin in capsule as there was only 1 transaction. From March to September, there were 6 coins in capsule transacted with prices ranging from S$248 to S$345 (nearly 40% increase). The graded coin prices may not be a good judgement for current prices as those were transacted from January to June. No transactions were made after June. However, it can be a good indication for good buy if you manage to find one selling at these prices.

The 1987 Silver Proof Panda was also issued as a set of 1 and 5 oz box set with COA.

Average Transacted Prices:
Set without COA - S$489.10 (US$354.21) (3 sets)
Set with COA - S$565.91 (US$397.89) (23 sets)
Price range (Jan- Nov 2010): S$440 - 857

Based on current prices, S$550 and below indicates a good buy.

1985 Silver Proof Panda

The 1985 Silver Proof Panda has the same specifications and mintage as the 1983 and 1984 version.

Transacted prices:

Coin in capsule - S$1,083.31 (US$772.33) (3)
Double-sealed coin - S$1,312.47 (US$995.11)
Coin in capsule with COA - S$1,307.13 (US$900.00)
Coin in capsule with COA & box - S$1,461.70 (US$1,113.88)

PCGS PR68 DCAM - S$1,129.09 (US$791.21)
PCGS PR69 DCAM - S$1,420.18 (US$977.00)
NGC PF69 UCAM - S$1,635.19 (US$1,186.25)

1984 Silver Proof Panda

The 1984 Silver Proof Panda has the same mintage and specifications as the 1983 version.

Transacted prices:

Coin in capsule - S$759.13 (US$525.00)
Double-sealed coin - S$801.84 (US$551.11)
Coin in capsule with COA - S$723.84 (US$520.11)
Coin in capsule with COA & box - S$1,734.95 (US$1,325.00)

PCGS PR68 DCAM - S$842.60 (US$583.21)
NGC PF68 UCAM - S$1,040.09 (US$750.00)
NGC PF69 UCAM - S$1,481.98 (US$1,064.96)

This undervalued coin has awakened. Though there were no similar transactions for comparison in 2009, in 2010, 4 transactions for NGC PF69 UCAM averaged at about S$1,148 (US$790) from March to May. In September and October, prices jumped to S$1,774.74 (US$1,299) and S$2,526.77 (US$1,930) respectively - more than 100% increase. In comparison with 1985 version, the 1984 Silver Proof Panda coin should have more upside.

1983 Silver Proof Panda

The inaugural Silver Panda coin was minted in 1983 - a year after the first Gold Panda coin was minted.

Diameter of 38.6mm, weighing just 27 g and fineness of 90%, the proof issue had a mintage of only 10,000. It was minted by Shanghai Mint and was packaged doubled-sealed in a box with Certificate of Authenticity (COA). However, it is not known what the issue price was back then.

Over the years, as the coins changed hands, it became more difficult to find a coin that has the original issued packaging. Hence, collectors are willing to pay more for original coin with COA than a coin that is not top graded.

There were less than 10 of this coin transacted in ebay for worldwide shipping.

Transacted prices as follows:
Coin in capsule - S$1,848.07 (US$1,336.00)
Double-sealed coin - S$1,682.88 (US$1,204.56)
Coin in capsule with COA & box - S$1,850.00 (US$1,413.89)
Double-sealed with COA & box - S$1,969.39 (US$1,400.00)

PCGS PR68 DCAM - S$1,593.14 (US$1,126.21)
NGC PF69 UCAM - S$4,662.08 (US$3,400.00)

There were 3 double-sealed coins transacted in January, July and lately, October. The increase in price from January to July and July to October was about 11% and 18% respectively, resulting in an overall increase of about 32%.

A similar percentage of increase is also observed for the original double-sealed coin with COA and box. Such a coin was transacted on 4 Aug 2009 for S$1,381, hence, accounting for nearly 34% increase. With less than 10,000 of such coins changing hands, there is a lot of potential for the 27 g coin to make another 35% gain in 2011.

Commentary: I guess I don't have to say much. As JPM and HSBC saga unwinds, silver spot price would clear US$30 mark. Prices here could easily go up by another 10-20%. But it is usually in these situations that the scarce coins find strong and firm hands.

Commentary: The rise in price of silver beyond US$20 has created a price support for the 2007 to 2009 Silver Panda coins hence my forecast of these versions to fall below S$50 did not realise. However, due to the flooding of 2010 version by siriussportauctions has brought prices below S$45 mark. This seller has been selling up to 8 coins in capsules and 8 in slabs daily, causing nearly 360% jump in volume from August. (165 v.s. 36). Do note that the jump in price of the 2001D version was attributed to extremely high shipping cost of US$35 charged by eproductdistribution as his coins were the only ones sold for the month for 2001D version.
Pre-2000 version were thinly traded but should see higher volume as higher silver prices are likely to attract sellers to list them. 1995 version were seen to be listed at rather high prices as Buy It Now. Perhaps, more people are finally able to take notice of the 3 different varieties now.

Commentary: Compared to July 2009, the number of transactions were much lower. In comparison with previous months, prices have softened except for the key dates like 2000. The 2008 and 2009 has fallen back below $50 mark while 2010 is heading for that. Apparently, the hype in China has died down because it can be seen that the Buy It Now price listed by Chinese sellers have gone down by more than 10%. Compared to a year ago, key date 2000 Frosted version could be bought for below $150. Since March 2010, its price has risen by more than 50%. Even ebay sellers like yeeren are asking to buy from collectors at US$125. It is unknown why the sudden interest in that particular year.

The Certificate of Authenticity (COA)

Counterfeit coin makers have become more advanced and more informed in printing COAs. Not only they align the correct name of the Governor of The People's Bank of China but also included the water mark on the paper, which shows a sitting Panda. However, the genuine water mark has slight imprint on the paper and that is probably the only difference.

As seen from above, the coin is housed in a special inter-locking capsule that locks and unlocks by turning.

2009 5 oz Chinese Silver Panda

5 oz Silver Panda coins were first issued in 1987 to 1995. During the first period of issue, the 5 oz version had a different design from the 1 oz version. The second period of 5 oz Silver Panda coins resumed in 2003. This time the 5 oz version has the same design as the 1 oz version except that it was proof struck.

2010 Chinese Panda Coin (Shenzhen Guobao v.s. Shenyang Mint) Part 2

This post highlights the remaining difference:

Shenyang Mint produced

  • The digit '2' on the Shenyang Mint product has a thicker horizontal line.
  • The year '2010' on the Shenzhen Mint product tend to be further from the rim, hence, can be known as by the common term for Panda coins - Small Date.

As mentioned earlier, there are at least 2 variations of the 2010 Silver Panda coin. This post highlights 2 areas of differences:

Differences:
1) Fur on the neck of left panda
2) Fur on the hind leg of right panda
3) Paws of the right panda
4) Bamboo background of the Shenzhen product tends to be more frosty

2009 Chinese Silver Panda (Shenzhen Guobao v.s. Shenyang Mint)

It has came to light that there are at least 2 variations of the 2009 Silver Panda coin. Shenzhen Guobao Mint uses a typical capsule that has 3 hitches that holds the coin in place. This can be seen from previously when Silver Panda coins were issued in sealed plastic pouch. It was observed that coins struck by Shenzhen Guobao Mint were more frosty and also the words '1 oz Ag .999' were given deeper strike than that of Shenyang Mint. It is not known to me whether Shanghai Mint produced any of these coins.

Vast differences can be spotted at the intersection of the black fur on the white near the neck and hind legs. Also, the white area of the leaves the panda is holding, the eyes and ears too.

Commentary: In general, prices have gone down with the exception of key date year 2000 and also new 2010 version. Price of 2010 version seem to have gone up but compared to previous months, excluding shipping costs, prices are actually down. In February, excluding shipping, coin cost S$38.87 but now it costs only S$37.02. However with shipping costs included, it is S$49.09 and S$55.84 for February and April respectively. In 414 deals, 402 were completed by a seller named midyatspor100 who charges US$15 for shipping. Total deal volume also doubled from 203 to 414 from previous month. It would be interesting to see how many more coins the seller (who lists 17 coins daily) has to sell.

The 1989 version was the very first issue of BU Silver Panda coins. It could be due to inexperience of the mints, the capsule containing the coin is not adequately thick hence resulted in many Panda forehead getting rubs. It is said that the 1989 version also has a frosty version but I have yet to get one in my hands. According to Mr. Ge Zu Kang's catalogue, the actual mintage for 1 oz.t is 250,000.
