The 1989 version was the very first issue of BU Silver Panda coins. It could be due to inexperience of the mints, the capsule containing the coin is not adequately thick hence resulted in many Panda forehead getting rubs. It is said that the 1989 version also has a frosty version but I have yet to get one in my hands. According to Mr. Ge Zu Kang's catalogue, the actual mintage for 1 oz.t is 250,000.

The difference between early die strike and a later strike is seen in these 2 coins. The coin named 'Frosty' actually descibes the 'frostiness' of the Panda and the Temple and mirrored fields. The coin is supposedly an early strike. The other coin that has dull and blurr field is supposedly a later struck coin with die wear.

The 1992 frosty version of the Chinese Silver Panda coin is my favourite version. Prior to owning the frosty version, I could only see the coin through photos. It was until I held both versions in my hands, could I tell the difference and the beauty of the frosty version. Most people call the frosty version 'Large Date' which got me trying to figure out the difference but it wasn't distinctive from photos. As seen from the first and second photos, the background of the Temple of Heaven is frosty and non-frosty respectively. The font of '1992' is also differentiated in terms of frostiness. On the reverse, the field is deep cameo while the relief is frosty on the frosty coin (third photo).

The Proof version is intriguing to me in a way that it has a torch mark on it, which I'm trying to find out what the torch mark meant for the coin. I have seen the torch mark on the obverse side of the coin but have yet to see the coin having the torch mark on the reverse side though the seller claimed it to be so.

1995 produced the last of the 5 oz.t early series before the 5 oz.t resumed production in 2003. Also, the 1 oz.t Proof version, unlike those from 1989 to 1994, it does not have a 'P' stamped on it because it had a different design from the BU Silver Panda. A different design was used subsequently from 1996 to 1999 till the 1 oz.t Proof version ceased production.

The 1 oz.t BU Silver Panda though produced by 2 different mints, it had 3 distinct versions. Shanghai Mint produced the 'Large Twig' version with the Large Date while Shenyang Mint produced the 'Small Twig' version with 2 sizes of the date - Large and Small Date. The Small Twig Large Date is also known as Small Twig Small Date after the initial Small Twig Small Date was renamed as Small Twig Micro Date. Hence, buyers need to be very careful when buying a coin that is listed as Small Twig Small Date else you could end up overpaying by at least 3 times the market price for a 'Micro Date' that was not.
